A child's most important expression can be through art! Each time that a student is in the art room, they are asked to visually express their unique response to a problem. Art represents divergent thinking. There is not one answer, but many solutions. These visual expression are our children's creativity. Everyone has something important to show themselves and us through their artwork. A multitude of art forms and medias are explored in art class at Oak Street School, along with caring, safety, skills, techniques, and procedures. Beginning immediately in kindergarten and continuing to build upon what is learned with each project through fifth grade, the students paint, color, draw from imagination and life, construct, assemble, form with markers, pencils, cray-pas, paper, straws, wood, clay, fabric, boxes, and . . . an endless combination of "stuff" that can become art! We realize the connection between art and every subject at Oak Street School. The "themes" studied within the classrooms become excellent applications of art forms in the art room, increasing knowledge of other cultures, crafts, and art history. Various aspects of art are scientific or mathematical. The correlation between art and music is multi-faceted. The vocabulary of art is introduced so that students will begin to learn how to make aesthetic decisions, and verbally respond to the many styles and periods of art, their art and another's work of art. There are many careers in art, and although few may become artists in profession, all will use art throughout their lifetime. To "look", "see", "visualize", "think creatively", "connectively", and "communicate" through art can only improve our children's self-esteem and help them to become enriched human beings, creating their own vision for life. Everyone loves to come to the art room!
