The fun and excitement in fourth grade has just begun. Our adventures lead us through language arts, math, writing, science, social studies and health. We read novels based on the themes; Survival, Recognizing Differences, Developing Tolerance, Adjustment to Change and Flexibility. Authors such as Van Allsburg, DiCamillo, Naylor, Hermes, and Clements are a small sampling of those we investigate and enjoy while our love of reading strengthens and grows.
Math takes us on a journey through manipulating concepts to solve math mysteries that apply to our everyday lives. We use calculators, compasses, templates, math games, pattern blocks and many more hands-on methods to achieve our common goal of becoming independent problem solvers.
The invitation to unlock the writer in ourselves is present through reader response journals, novel notebooks, and writer’s notebooks. We begin to see things through a writer’s eyes and put our thoughts and experiences into words as we develop our writing skills.
Units on Motion and Design, Electricity and Rocks & Minerals keep us busy as we discover the world of science around us. We experiment and explore in and outside our classroom doors answering the curiosity that each topic creates. Our field trip to the Franklin Mineral Mines adds excitement to our year in May.
Our field trips to the Trenton Barracks and Statehouse give us a great opportunity to investigate what we are learning in Social Studies. We study New Jersey's roots starting with Native Americans and their experiences in our state. In addition to Native Americans, we will study Explorers, Colonial America, Revolution and the Constitution. Students from Ridge High School present the PUSH program in October. They help us to identify health issues that affect us. We learn from these role models that have volunteered to come serve us as mentors. Enthusiasm for learning drives fourth graders through the wonderful experiences around Oak Street School.
